In the south of Florida you will find this flavor, and the name is familiar. Locally the hot sauce and pepper taste is known by most, and there is even a festival for the pepper, but the name might not be recognized by most chilliheads. The pepper is the Datil pepper.
The Datil pepper is a hot pepper native to St. Augustine Florida, which more than likely came from Chile in the 1800s. This yellow pepper often known as the “yellow lantern pepper” usually lies between 100,000 and 300,000 scoville units similar to the heat of a habenero. The Datil pepper is sweeter than the habenero, but you rarely see it outside of St. Augustine.
We recently featured San Augustin Pepper Sauce as a Craft Hot Sauce Profile, which focuses on one sauce, their Datil Pepper Sauce. Their owner Tim Bucolo mentioned that the best peppers grow within a 50 mile radius of St. Augustine and they are about 3.5 inches in length when mature.
In the past 10 years chiliheads have expanded into looking into more niche sauces like the Datil Sauce. If you have not tried the pepper or the sauce, keep an eye out because even though it comes from a small area, the pepper is making a big impact on the growing hot sauce industry.
